Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), like many other nutrients, is only soluble in water. Cells are surrounded by a membrane made largely of fats. Only a small amount of water-soluble nutrients can pass through the cell membrane.

In the liposomal form, the vitamin C is contained in a spherical vesicle encased in fat: the liposome. The liposome protects the contents from the action of gastric acid and ensures easier absorption from the digestive tract.
