Eduard de Wilde
I am the founder of LiveHelfi, and, in no particular order, father, husband, athlete, consultant, biohacker, entrepreneur and amateur chef. I have been interested in nutrition and health for years. Since September 2016 I am a certified Bulletproof Coach.
When I turned 30, I started gaining over 2 pounds in weight every year. Eventually, I was 33 pounds overweight. That was unpleasant, and I wanted to become slim and fit again. On top of that, as a result of a side effect of the anti-malaria drug Lariam I had taken in 2000, I had developed an anxiety and panic disorder. I was, therefore, looking for a healthy lifestyle that would enable me to lose weight, keep slim and minimize the adverse effects of Lariam.
The Paleo lifestyle
The Paleo lifestyle turned out to be the right answer. I first came into contact with the Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. He also has a popular blog with very interesting articles: Mark's Daily Apple. After reading that I started following various writers in the field of Paleo, such as Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Chris Kresser, Tim Ferris and Dave Asprey.
The Bulletproof Lifestyle
Then I became a fan of the Bulletproof Diet, developed by Dave Asprey. This is the upgraded version of the Paleo Diet. Dave Asprey is the founder of the biohacking brand Bulletproof. The brand offers supplements and nutrition that support the Bulletproof Diet and lifestyle. I wanted to get these products, but found out how difficult it was. The shipping costs from the US are high, and shipping takes a long time. Making the Bulletproof product range available for Europeans without hassle motivated me to start LiveHelfi in 2014!
Furthermore, I wanted to help others with my knowledge and experience. The products are of no use if you don't know which ones to pick and how to use them. I know from experience how difficult this search is in a jungle of fragmented information. Helping other people was the reason I signed up for the first Bulletproof Coachings Training and became a certified Bulletproof Coach in 2016.
What do you want to achieve with LiveHelfi?
It is my mission to make products and information easily accessible to enable anyone to improve their physical and mental performance.
Many people struggle with tiredness, obesity and other health problems that cannot be solved by a GP. Others might just want to get more out of life. The human body is a chemical factory that is powered by what you put in it and the way you manage it. Nutrition plays a large role, but so do sleep, exercise, cold, heat, light, technology, stressmanagement and environment. I am fascinated by the idea that you can improve your quality of life by adjusting these buttons.
I would like to share this with as many people as possible so that we can profit from this knowledge together. The goal is to develop LiveHelfi together with our readers and customers.
How do you engage with Biohacking, Bulletproof and Paleo yourself?
As a biohacker, I like experimenting with various lifestyle factors to determine what works best for me. Everybody has a different genetic makeup, environment and history. What works for one person doesn't have to work for everyone. The key is to design your personal lifestyle. The beauty is that with the rapid developments of technology, it is increasingly easy to measure the effects for yourself. That is why I am a big fan of the Quantified Self: collecting information about your body to learn from it.
I will give you a few insights into my lifestyle. Thanks to this lifestyle, I can control my anxiety and panic disorder, keep my weight under control, and have a lot of energy to function well and enjoy life.
I aim to get maximum results from my life with the least effort. I work out at home for 15 minutes several days per week to ensure sufficient muscle mass and stamina. It gives me a fit body for fun activities like golf, hiking and water skiing. I have lost 33 pounds with it, and I can still keep to my target weight relatively easily.
I know I gain weight from a diet that includes too many carbs. That is why I eat as much as possible according to the principles of a Paleo, Primal and Bulletproof diet. Paleo, Primal and Bulletproof are different names for lifestyles with many similarities. They all focus on eating unprocessed foods, healthy fats, a lot of vegetables, few carbs and a moderate amount of protein. I have experienced that my blood sugar level remains constant through this, giving me a continuous energy level throughout the day. I also avoid foods that have a negative effect on my body. These include, for example, wheat and many vegetable oils. It is not a rigid system that is the same for everyone. Some people need carbs more than others. Other people don't respond well to fat. You must view the principles as a template you can tailor based on your needs and experiences. A fit body makes it easier to enjoy life!
Cold thermogenesis and sauna
I was one of the first to attend a workshop by Iceman Wim Hof in 2014. Since then, ice baths (in summer) and cold showering (rest of the year) have been part of my daily routine. I combine this with the Wim Hof Breathing Method. The benefits include fat burning, increasing immunity, accelerating recovery, etc.
The sauna became part of my routine when I bought an infrared sauna in 2022.
Nootropics are supplements that increase your brain performance. I experiment with the different nootropics that we offer on Livehelfi. I learned in my coaching practice that not all nootropics give the desired effect for every person. So you have to find out and experiment with what works for you. I also use coffee as a nootropic in the morning. Some days I upgrade my coffee by adding C8 MCT Oil and Ghee/butter to it and mixing it in a blender.
Fasting gives my body a stretched window to recover and repair itself. It also allows me to lower my calorie intake to maintain my weight. Normally, I eat two meals a day, between 12.00 and 18.00. Some days I take my upgraded coffee in the morning (which gives me more energy and doesn't break my fasting). On other days I eat only one meal. It all depends on my mood!
I like to experiment with all kinds of gadgets. Examples are the Nucalm, Sensate, Apollo Neuro, the Heartmath Inner balance trainer, and Infrared panels, to name a few.
Is life any fun this way?
People often ask if it is not boring to live like this. Or if I don't get tired of the biohacking lifestyle. The answer is no! The fact that I get rewarded with more energy, focus, looking better, etc., motivates me to keep going.
Take it easy
It is all about integrating biohacking into your daily routines. When you do that, it is not a task anymore, and it doesn't require a lot of discipline. I did not start to add all my hacks to my daily routine in one go. I gradually added what I liked and what worked for me and quit what was getting less interesting.
The question I get asked most is about my Paleo/low-carb/ketogenic diet and how I persevere that. It is not more than a mindset. We all can all do without bread, pasta and cereal. We can all cook delicious meals with whole foods and fewer carbs.
I have quite a bit of self-discipline, but I am only human. That is why I follow the 80-20 rule. I live by the principles of a biohacking lifestyle as much as possible (80% of the time). I do cheat and can even enjoy it without feeling guilty, as long as it is an exception (20% of the time). This cheating makes me persevere.
Last but not least, experimenting and tracking the impact is so much fun!
