MassZymes contains a higher proportion of protein-digesting enzymes than comparable formulas, with 300,000 units per serving. In addition, MassZymes also provides 60 μg of vitamin D3 per serving, which, according to their tests, supports enzyme activity.

MassZymes is produced without animal products, making it suitable for vegans. It is also free of soy, gluten and lactose. MassZymes is produced according to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines.

How digestive enzymes work

Enzymes speed up chemical reactions in the body. Digestion is really nothing more than a complete breakdown process of food into pieces small enough to absorb in the intestines. Proteins break down into peptides and amino acids; carbohydrates into sugars; fats into loose fatty acids. The enzymes that speed up these reactions are named after them.

  • Protease: an enzyme that breaks down proteins (protein)
  • Lipase: an enzyme that breaks down fats (lipids)
  • Lactase: an enzyme that breaks down lactose (milk sugar)

pH dependent

Enzymes work best at a specific pH (acidity) that is different for each enzyme. Stomach enzymes do well in an acidic environment (low pH), while intestinal enzymes work better in an alkaline environment (high pH). A good digestive enzyme mix takes this into account and provides enzymes that suit our digestive tract.

Activity of enzymes

The dosage of enzymes is often expressed as 'activity' or 'units'. Enzymes have a function and you want to dose them based on how well they do that function. The unit of the enzyme is a standard measure of how much work they do. Based on that, you can compare different formulas.
