What is MCT oil?
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, also knows as medium chain fatty acids. MCT oil is extracted from coconut or palm oil. What makes this oil so special compared to regular oil, is the rate at which it is converted into energy by the body. MCT oil has a neutral flavour and is therefore excellent to use in smoothies, salads, or other foods that you would usually use oils such as olive oil or sunflower oil in. It can be heated up to 160°C.

There are 4 types of medium chain fatty acids: C6, C8, C10 and C12. When you purchase oil, it is important to check that it doesn't contain C6. This has an unpleasant flavour. If the label doesn't mention the type of fatty acid that is used, chances are it contains the cheap fatty acid C6. C12 is essentially too long to be quickly converted into energy by the body. High-quality MCT oil consists of C8 (Caprylic acid) or C10 (Capric acid). C8 is the most valuable. We have a blog that explains more about the difference between XCT oil and Octane oil.
